WEST BENGAL: Today, a Sealdah court in Kolkata will deliver its judgment in the case of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case from the Kolkata Police following the Calcutta High Court’s order, has requested the “maximum punishment” for Sanjay Roy, the sole accused.

The trial concluded on January 9.

The victim’s mother expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation ahead of the verdict, saying,

“What the police had done in five days, the CBI has done in five months.”

She added,

“There will be further investigation, we are not happy with the probe. We know that Sanjoy Roy is the culprit but he alone could not have committed such a crime in a 24×7 hospital. When all involved are punished, we will be satisfied. We did not want a CBI investigation… It was the court that decided that the CBI would probe the case.”

The incident occurred on August 9 last year, when the 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her body was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital.

“Sanjoy (Roy, prime accused) is a criminal. He will be punished, and whatever the court feels, that punishment will be given to him. We have gone to the High Court and Supreme Court for justice.”

The Victim’s Life and Aspirations

The victim had earned her MBBS degree from a Nadia hospital in 2018. Her father shared,

“She secured a good rank in medical and engineering entrance exams, but chose to follow her heart.”

Tragically, her dreams were cut short on August 9, 2022, at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where her promising career came to a horrific end.

Family and acquaintances described her as an exceptionally bright student and an empathetic doctor who was always ready to help others.

“She would always be held up as an example for others to follow,”

-her uncle said.

After completing her graduation, she dedicated two more years to secure admission in a government college to pursue her preferred specialization. Her father recounted,

“She had two options — JNM Kalyani Medical College and RG Kar. We all thought, with RG Kar, she would be in the metro city with better facilities.”
