Kolkata: Sealdah Court, On Monday, in West Bengal framed charges against the main accused, Sanjay Roy, under sections 103(1), 64, and 66 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sahita in connection with the RG Kar rape-murder case.
The trial is scheduled to begin on November 11.
As he was escorted from the court, Roy maintained his innocence, stating,
“I have been framed. I told the judge that I am innocent, but they did not listen to me.”
The incident concerns the murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata on August 9.
Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual employee with Kolkata Police, has been charged with the rape and murder of the doctor, who was on duty at the time. According to CBI sources, statements from around 200 individuals recorded as part of the investigation.
The CBI’s chargesheet largely follows the investigation initially carried out by Kolkata Police, relying heavily on both digital and material evidence to establish Roy’s presence at the crime scene. CCTV footage has been key in confirming his movements, particularly from 3:34 a.m. on August 9, when he was seen entering the trauma center building, the location of the alleged crime.
According to the CBI chargesheet. By 4:32 a.m., he was seen leaving the ward on the third floor, still holding the helmet in his left hand, but the neckband earphones were no longer around his neck.
This item served as key evidence for the Kolkata Police, leading to the arrest of Sanjoy Roy the day after the crime. The chargesheet also mentioned that Customer Acquisition Form details and Call Detail Records for Sanjoy Roy’s mobile number confirmed his presence at the hospital during the time of the incident.
In addition to the earphones, the CBI listed several items of physical evidence, including the victim’s mobile phone and laptop, the accused’s mobile phone, the accused’s blood sample, and blood and viscera examined during the autopsy. According to the chargesheet, these items were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Kolkata, New Delhi, and Chandigarh.
Forensic experts also examined various other items, including jeans, underwear, a brassiere, a kurti, a blanket, bedsheets, a piece of cloth, synthetic cotton, nail clippings and scrapings, a blood sample, a lip swab, an endocervical swab, a vaginal swab, and pubic hair combings. On August 12, pants and slippers seized from the accused’s barracks, which he had worn during the crime, were found to contain the victim’s blood.
The chargesheet further noted that saliva from the accused detected on a nipple swab collected during the autopsy, and short hair belonging to Sanjoy Roy recovered from the crime scene.
The investigation into the crime progressed rapidly, leading to Sanjoy Roy’s arrest less than 24 hours after the discovery of the victim’s body. Investigators were able to link Roy to the crime scene through various pieces of evidence, including video footage that reportedly placed him at the location. Additionally, Roy’s Bluetooth headphones were found near the scene, further tying him to the incident. More alarming were the reports that explicit content was allegedly found on Roy’s mobile device, raising significant concerns about his involvement in the crime.
