Ramayan, Quran, Guru Granth Sahib, Bible : MP Court Quotes From All 4 While Sentencing Man To Death For Killing Adoptive Mother

MADHYA PRADESH: In a rare and powerful judgment that blends law with deep moral and religious reflections, a district court in Madhya Pradesh sentenced Deepak Pachauri to death for the brutal murder of his adoptive mother, drawing upon teachings from Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhism referring to Ramayan, Quran, Guru Granth Sahib, Bible to highlight the sanctity of the parent-child relationship.

Background of the Case

The chilling crime occurred on May 6, 2024, in Sheopur’s Railway Colony. Deepak Pachauri, adopted from a Gwalior orphanage two decades ago, was living with his mother, Ushadevi Pachauri, a woman who had once embraced him as her own child. But in a horrific turn of events, the very child she nurtured became her killer.

After his father passed away in 2021, Deepak inherited a fixed deposit of Rs 16,85,000, which he later lost in the stock market. When his mother refused to give him access to her savings of Rs 32 lakh, he allegedly murdered her in cold blood, pushing her down the stairs, striking her with an iron rod, and strangling her with a sari. In a bid to conceal the crime, Deepak buried the body beneath the bathroom floor, sealed it with bricks and cement, and falsely reported her missing a month later.

Court’s Observation

Special Judge L D Solanki, presiding over the case, delivered a judgment that went far beyond the language of the statutes. Instead, the court turned to scriptural wisdom to underscore the gravity of the crime and the moral abyss into which the accused had fallen.

“The one who bears the responsibility of protecting parents… if that very protector becomes the destroyer, then why would parents raise such a child?”

the court asked.

The Court added,

“If the fence itself starts eating the crop, then whom will the farmer trust?”

The court referenced Ramcharitmanas, highlighting Lord Rama’s devotion to his parents:

“A son alone is truly blessed who obeys the words of his parents… a son who satisfies his parents is rare in the entire world.”

It also invoked the story of Shravan Kumar, the ideal son who carried his blind parents on a pilgrimage, emphasizing what true filial piety looks like.

The Court cited the Guru Granth Sahib to reflect Sikh values:

“one who serves mother and father knows his own salvation. One who serves mother and father is called a true brave person. Without such brave people, how can the lineage continue?”

The court referred to the Quran:

“It is written that your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not…rebuke them, but speak to them respectfully”.

Quoting Matthew 15:4 and the Book of Exodus, the Court said,

“Honour your father and mother, and whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death”.

“Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. Whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death”.

Deepak Pachauri was convicted under:

  • Section 302 IPC: Death by hanging for murder
  • Section 201 IPC: 7 years rigorous imprisonment for destruction of evidence
  • Fines: Rs 1,000 for each offense; failure to pay will result in six additional months of rigorous imprisonment per section.

The judgment declared the act a clear case of premeditated murder driven by greed, noting the gruesome details:

“The accused did not let the deceased live… hit her head several times with an iron rod, broke her skull and nose, strangled her, and buried her beneath bathroom tiles.”

Judge Solanki concluded that showing leniency in such a case would discourage people from adopting orphaned children and weaken society’s moral fabric.

“If leniency is shown… no childless parents will adopt any orphan child, and it will have a very adverse effect on society.”
