Rahul Gandhi’s Plea Denied: Court Rejects Query on Savarkar Kin’s Maternal Lineage in Defamation Row

Pune: On Saturday, May 31, a court in Pune dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s request to get details about the maternal family background of Satyaki Savarkar, who is the grand-nephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

This request was part of a defamation case filed against Rahul Gandhi.

The complaint was made by Satyaki Savarkar, who felt hurt by some comments made by Rahul Gandhi about V.D. Savarkar, a famous Hindutva figure.

The case is being heard in the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Amol Shinde.

The judge rejected Rahul Gandhi’s application and said that the case is not about the family history of Satyaki Savarkar’s mother but about the alleged defamatory statements made by Rahul Gandhi in a speech delivered in London.

In his order, Magistrate Amol Shinde clearly said,

“the case pertains to an alleged defamatory speech made by Gandhi in London and not to the family tree of late Himani Ashok Savarkar, the mother of Satyaki Savarkar.”

Rahul Gandhi’s legal team had requested details of Himani Savarkar’s maternal family.

But the judge pointed out that this information was not necessary for deciding the main issue of whether Rahul Gandhi’s remarks were defamatory or not.

It is important to know that Himani Savarkar, the mother of Satyaki Savarkar, was the daughter of Gopal Vinayak Godse.

Gopal Vinayak Godse was the younger brother of Nathuram Godse, who was the man responsible for assassinating Mahatma Gandhi.
