BENGALURU: Former MP and suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a high-profile rape case. The 34-year-old, who is also the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, spent his first night at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru under high-security custody, visibly shaken and reportedly in tears.

Just a day after the Special Court for MPs/MLAs, presided over by Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat, handed him the life sentence, Revanna was assigned prisoner number 15528. The judgment came in one of the four sexual assault cases filed against him, marking a steep and tragic fall from political prominence to incarceration.

According to prison authorities, Revanna was emotionally overwhelmed during his initial medical assessment late Saturday night.

“He broke down during the medical check-up and expressed his anguish to the staff,”

a senior official reported.

Despite the gravity of the sentence, the authorities ensured that his medical condition was stable before assigning him to a high-security cell.

Revanna was convicted in a 2021 rape case involving a 48-year-old domestic worker employed at the family’s Gannikada farmhouse in Holenarasipura, Hassan district. The survivor alleged that she was raped twice, once at the farmhouse and again at the family’s Bengaluru residence, both acts allegedly recorded on the accused’s phone.
