An MP-MLA court in Sultanpur has granted AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal permission to travel abroad in a poll code violation case from 2014. His lawyer said the order came after the court reserved its decision on September 8.

Sultanpur: An MP-MLA court in Sultanpur has given permission to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to travel abroad in connection with a poll code violation case. His lawyer, Rudra Pratap Singh Madan, confirmed this development on Tuesday.

The hearing took place on September 8, after which Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shubham Verma reserved the order. Later, the court granted permission to Kejriwal for foreign travel.

On September 8, after the hearing, Madan had told reporters that a poll code violation case was earlier registered in Amethi against Kejriwal.

He explained,

“Earlier, the court had allowed renewal of his passport with a condition that he must seek permission before any foreign travel. Today, we requested the court to lift that condition as he needs to travel abroad. The hearing was held and the order has been reserved.”

In August this year, the same court had allowed Kejriwal to renew his passport but placed the condition that he could not leave the country without prior court approval.

This restriction was connected to the fact that Kejriwal is currently on bail in the case.

The matter goes back to 2014, when Kejriwal was booked for alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the Lok Sabha elections in Amethi district’s Gauriganj and Musafirkhana areas. The allegations were related to campaigning practices at the time.

Currently, the proceedings in this case have been stayed following directions from the Supreme Court. However, the condition regarding foreign travel had remained in place until the latest order from the Sultanpur court, which has now allowed him to go abroad after reviewing the request.
