Pahalgam Tragedy Aftermath: Folk Singer Neha Singh Rathore Booked for Sedition Over Provocative Posts

UTTAR PRADESH: Police in Lucknow have filed a case of sedition against folk singer Neha Singh Rathore. This action was taken after a complaint said that her posts on social media could disturb the unity of the country.

Her posts were made after the tragic Pahalgam incident and were said to target a particular religious group.

Last week, a terrible incident took place in Pahalgam where terrorists brutally killed 26 people, most of whom were tourists. It is reported that the terrorists first asked about the victims’ religion before killing them.

This shocking event left the whole country in deep sorrow and anger, demanding justice against those responsible.

Following this, a complaint was filed by Abhay Pratap Singh.

In his complaint, he said,

“In this situation, singer and poetess Neha Singh Rathore, using her Twitter (now X) handle @nehafolksinger made some objectionable posts that can adversely affect the national integrity and made repeated efforts to incite one community against another based on religion.”

The case against Neha Singh Rathore has been registered at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow.

Police have said that they registered the case against the folk singer under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include promoting hatred between communities, disturbing public peace, and putting at risk the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.

The police also mentioned that she has been booked under the Information Technology Act for her social media activities.

It is important to note that in the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, there is no direct mention of sedition like there was in the old Indian Penal Code under Section 124A. However, the BNS addresses similar offences under Section 152, which deals with acts that endanger the country’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity.
