Mumbai: Today (16th July): Mihir Shah, the main accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case, was sent to judicial custody until July 30.

The incident occurred on July 7 around 5:30 am on Worli’s Anni Besant Road, resulting in the death of 40-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa, who was on a scooter with her husband Pradeep. Mihir Shah, who fled the scene, was arrested two days later in Virar, Palghar district.

Presented before chief metropolitan magistrate S P Bhosale, Mihir was initially remanded to police custody until July 16. On July 16, the court extended his custody for another 14 days.

Police reports state that Kaveri Nakhwa was dragged for about 1.5 km by the speeding BMW before Mihir Shah stopped, switched seats with his driver Rajrishi Bidawat, and escaped in another vehicle.

The driver reportedly ran over her while reversing the car. Investigations revealed that Mihir sped towards the Bandra-Worli Sea Link with Kaveri entangled in the car’s wheels for over 1.5 km.

Charges against the accused include culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Mihir’s father, Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) functionary from Palghar, facilitated Mihir’s escape.

Rajesh was arrested but granted bail the next day. Following this, he was dismissed from his position as deputy leader of Shiv Sena. Rajrishi Bidawat, the family chauffeur, was also arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody on July 11.
