‘Makhna’ Controversy Ends | Mohali Court Quashes FIR Against Yo Yo Honey Singh After 6 Years

MOHALI: A Mohali court has officially quashed the six-year-old First Information Report (FIR) against popular rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. The FIR was filed in 2019 over alleged objectionable lyrics in his 2018 track Makhna. The case had raised public debate on freedom of expression in music versus societal sensitivity, and now reached its closure through the National Lok Adalat.

Background of the Case

The controversy began when complaints were filed against Honey Singh under IPC Sections 294 and 509, Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, and Section 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Punjab State Women’s Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati and ASI Lakhwinder Kaur alleged that certain lyrics in Makhna were objectionable and degrading towards women.

The FIR was registered at Mataur police station in 2019, sparking heated discussions across the music and legal community. The Punjab Women’s Commission even went so far as to recommend a ban on the song.

The Closure of the Case

During proceedings before the National Lok Adalat in Mohali, both complainants clarified their stance. ASI Lakhwinder Kaur recorded her statement in 2024, and Manisha Gulati followed in 2025, with both stating they had no objection to the closure of the matter. Their positions effectively cleared the way for the court to accept the closure report.

With the Lok Adalat’s acceptance, the FIR has now been quashed, marking the end of the legal battle against Honey Singh in this case.
