Chennai: Today, on July 15, a court in Tamil Nadu has sentenced a man named Hemaraj to life imprisonment till death for sexually assaulting and trying to murder a four-month pregnant woman inside a moving train.

This horrifying crime happened earlier this year on February 6, 2025, in the 22616 Tirupathi Intercity Express, a passenger train running through Tamil Nadu.

The victim, a woman who was four months pregnant, was travelling alone when the accused, Hemaraj from Vellore district, attacked her.

The incident took place while the train was in motion, which made the situation even more dangerous and terrifying. The brutal nature of the crime shocked the public and raised serious concerns about passenger safety on trains.

As soon as the Tamil Nadu Railway Police received the information, they quickly registered a case at the Jolarpet Railway Police Station.

Within 24 hours, the police managed to identify and arrest Hemaraj. He was then taken into judicial custody after a preliminary investigation confirmed his involvement.

After a detailed investigation, the police filed a chargesheet on April 24, 2025, and the case went to trial before the Thirupathur District Sessions Court. The court took up the case on priority and fast-tracked the proceedings. On July 14, 2025, the Sessions Court found Hemaraj guilty of the crime and gave him the harsh punishment of “Life Imprisonment till death.”

This verdict comes shortly after another major judgment in June 2025, where the POCSO court in Chennai convicted Gnansekaran in the Anna University sexual assault case, giving him 35 years in prison for his crime.

After the judgment in Hemaraj’s case, the Tamil Nadu Police released a press note through the Office of the Director General of Police, reaffirming their commitment towards delivering justice to women who are victims of crime.

The police department said,

“Tamil Nadu Police is committed to ensuring justice for women victims through swift investigation and prosecution.”

They also mentioned that they are taking extra efforts to fight the increasing number of sexual offences in the state.

The department stated,

“Amid a spurt in sexual offences against women, the department emphasised its meticulous handling of crimes against women, from investigation to securing conviction.”
