The accused are Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), and Zaib Ahmed (19). They were produced in the Court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
The court sent them to police custody till July 8, 2025.
The incident reportedly took place between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. inside the guard room of the college campus, where the girl was allegedly confined and assaulted.
Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the three under charges related to gang-rape and wrongful confinement. All three were arrested quickly—between Thursday and Friday after the incident.
Pinaki Banerjee, the college guard who was present on duty during the time of the alleged assault, was also arrested by the police on Saturday. He was presented before the court and sent to police custody till July 4, 2025.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, the public prosecutor told the court that the survivor had fallen sick while being assaulted.
The accused reportedly gave her an inhaler to help her recover before continuing the assault.
The prosecutor prayed for 10 days of police custody to carry out further investigation.
At the same time, the defence lawyer denied the charges. He claimed that a “conspiracy” was being framed against the accused and that there were no videos on the accused’s phones, as alleged by the survivor.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma spoke to the media, saying,
“The case is under investigation. Since the case is very sensitive, we do not want to share details. However, the FIR was prompt. The three accused were arrested within 12 hours and one more person was arrested soon after. We have collected a lot of evidence, which is being analysed. The investigation is underway.”
The Kolkata Police also made an important statement online. They warned the public not to share the survivor’s identity.
“It has come to notice that certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity of the victim in the Kasba case through the circulation of confidential documents. This is a serious violation of the law… Respecting the dignity and privacy of victims is a legal obligation and a moral imperative,”
-the Kolkata Police said in their official social media post.
In a major development, some lawyers submitted a letter to the Alipore Bar Council and the Alipore Criminal Court Bar Association. They asked for a resolution to stop any lawyer from representing the accused for bail.
Two lawyers from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legal cell, Chandan Kumar Saha and Subir Sengupta, also held a protest in front of Alipore Court. They questioned whether Monojit Mishra, the main accused, had properly disclosed his background when he was appointed at the law college. They pointed out that he claims to be a practising lawyer.

Mr. Sengupta strongly stated-
“We do not want an alleged rapist to flaunt the fact that he is part of the legal fraternity or for him to seek any sympathies on account of that. The other two accused are law students, and therefore, future lawyers. We boycott all three of them from our fraternity.”
