A man in Belagavi, Karnataka, attacked his wife and mother-in-law with a hidden machete inside a court corridor just before their divorce hearing. Both women sustained serious injuries; police have launched an investigation.

Belagavi, Karnataka: Today, on July 22, a shocking incident occurred at a court in Saundatti town of Belagavi district, Karnataka, when a man brutally attacked his wife and her mother with a machete before a scheduled divorce hearing.

The incident took place inside the court premises, leaving both women seriously injured and raising serious concerns about safety and security within court complexes.

The couple had come to the Saundatti court for their divorce hearing. However, the man, identified as Muttappa Ganachari, was reportedly angry and upset that his wife, Aishwarya, and her family were forcing the divorce.

In a sudden and violent outburst, he pulled out a machete and attacked Aishwarya and her mother, Anasuya, while they were waiting in the corridor for the hearing, which was scheduled to take place after lunch.

In full public view, Muttappa launched the attack, catching everyone off guard. According to the police, he had managed to hide the machete inside his shirt before entering the court complex.

Bheemashankar S Guled, Superintendent of Police, Belagavi said,

“We have learnt he had hidden the machete inside his shirt, and before entering the court premises,”

Eyewitnesses and court staff quickly intervened. Muttappa was restrained by police officers present at the location and by other people who witnessed the assault.

The injured women, Aishwarya and Anasuya, were immediately taken to a hospital in Dharwad for urgent medical treatment. Their condition was reported to be serious.

Authorities have assured the public that security measures will be reviewed and strengthened to prevent such horrifying incidents from happening again.

Mr Guled said,

“We will take measures to ensure a stronger vigil inside the court premises to prevent such incidents,”

The Saundatti Police have registered a case against Muttappa Ganachari, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. The police are examining how the weapon was smuggled into the court and whether there were any lapses in security.
