A Goa court has extended the police custody of Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, by five days in connection with the deadly December 6 fire that killed 25 people. The Anjuna police are probing culpable homicide charges as the investigation widens to other accused.

A court in Goa on Monday, December 22, 2025, extended the police custody of Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, the owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, where a major fire incident on December 6 claimed the lives of 25 people.

The tragic fire shocked Goa and the entire country, as several young people lost their lives due to alleged safety violations at the popular nightclub located in Anjuna.

Following the incident, Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra fled India and went to Thailand. After an international coordination effort, the two brothers were deported from Thailand and brought back to India on December 17.

After hearing the matter, the Goa court allowed the police request and extended their police custody by five more days to continue the investigation.

Speaking about the court’s order, advocate Vishnu Joshi, who is appearing for the families of the victims, said,

“The court has extended the police custody of Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra by five days”.

The court also passed an order regarding another accused in the case. Ajay Gupta, who is also one of the owners of the nightclub, has been sent to judicial custody.

According to advocate Joshi, the police did not ask for an extension of Ajay Gupta’s police custody, due to which the court remanded him to judicial custody.

The Anjuna police have registered a serious criminal case against the Luthra brothers. They have been booked under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with other related offences.

The police allege that gross negligence, violation of fire safety norms, and illegal operations at the club led to the deadly fire.

So far, eight people have been arrested in connection with the nightclub fire case. The investigation is still ongoing, and the police are questioning the accused to find out who was responsible for allowing the club to function despite alleged safety lapses.

In a major development, the police have also started the process of issuing a Blue Corner Notice against Surinder Kumar Khosla, a British national who is named as an accused in the case.

Khosla is believed to have fled to the United Kingdom after the incident. A Blue Corner Notice is issued through Interpol to collect information about the location, identity, or activities of a person involved in a crime.

The case continues to draw public attention as families of the victims demand strict action and accountability. Authorities have stated that no one responsible for the tragic loss of lives will be spared, and further arrests may be made as the investigation progresses.
