Last year, the green tribunal had initiated action on the matter of Ganga and its tributaries’ pollution in five states. The Ganga traverses through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal before converging into the Bay of Bengal.
A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, while noting Bihar’s report dated February 17 this year, said 20 out of the state’s 38 districts had submitted their reports with incomplete and partially wrong information.
The bench, including judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, acknowledged the state counsel’s assurance that the necessary information would be provided by the district magistrates, who lead the District Ganga Protection Committees, within six weeks.
In a ruling issued on February 19, the tribunal emphasized,
“We emphasize that if the comprehensive required information is not provided to the tribunal, we may need to mandate the personal attendance of the Chief Secretary.”
The case has been scheduled for review on May 1 to assess the state’s report.
