A court in Maharashtra’s Thane district has once again postponed the hearing in the defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by an RSS worker. The case is being heard by Bhiwandi Joint Civil Judge, Junior Division, P M Kolse, and the matter will now come up on December 6.

The case was scheduled for hearing on Saturday. During the proceedings, complainant Rajesh Kunte’s advocate, Prabodh Jaywant, filed an application asking the court to allow him to examine Inspector Ashok Saykar from the Nizampura police station as a witness.

Earlier, the court had asked the Nizampura police to investigate the case and submit a report. Inspector Saykar had submitted that probe report, and the complainant now wants the officer to testify regarding the same.

Initially, the next hearing date was fixed for November 29.

However, Rahul Gandhi’s advocate, Narayan Iyer, submitted an application seeking an adjournment, stating that Gandhi’s legal team would not be available on that day. Considering this request, the court shifted the hearing to December 6.

This defamation case dates back to Rahul Gandhi’s speech at an election rally near Bhiwandi on March 6, 2014.

In that rally, Gandhi allegedly said

“the RSS people killed (Mahatma) Gandhi”.

Following this remark, RSS worker Rajesh Kunte filed a criminal defamation complaint, arguing that Gandhi’s statement harmed the reputation of the organisation and its members.

The case has been ongoing for several years, with multiple hearings and procedural steps. The latest adjournment means that further arguments and witness examination will now continue in December.

The court is expected to decide next on whether Inspector Saykar will be examined as a witness in connection with the probe report.
