The parents of a woman allegedly deceased after receiving the Covishield vaccine plan to file a case against the Serum Institute of India (SII). This decision follows AstraZeneca’s acknowledgment in court that their Covid shot can cause a rare side effect, providing hope for the parents in seeking justice. [BREAKING] Covishield & Heart Attack | Grieving Parents to Seek Justice in Court After AstraZeneca Confirms Vaccine Side Effects

INDIA: The bereaved parents of a young woman who allegedly died to a rare side effect after receiving the Covishield vaccine are preparing to take legal action against the Serum Institute of India (SII). This decision comes in the wake of a recent admission by AstraZeneca, the international distributor of the vaccine, acknowledging the potential for severe side effects.

Covishield, the vaccine developed in collaboration with AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, has been under scrutiny following reports linking it to thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS). TTS is a rare but serious condition characterized by blood clots and a low platelet count. The acknowledgment from AstraZeneca surfaced during a class-action lawsuit that claims the vaccine caused deaths and severe injuries.

The aggrieved family, still mourning the loss of their daughter Karunya, expressed a mix of relief and frustration at AstraZeneca’s admission. Venugopalan Govindan, Karunya’s father, stated,

“The admission by AstraZeneca is too late and has come after so many lives have been lost.”

He criticized both AstraZeneca and the SII for continuing the vaccine’s distribution after several European countries had already suspended or limited its use due to similar incidents in March 2021.

“The regulatory bodies that approved it and subsequently didn’t intervene to stop it when data emerged about the dangers, are all culpable in the death of my daughter and countless others who have died after taking this so-called vaccine,”

-Govindan alleged.

He argued that both the manufacturer and the government heavily promoted the vaccines nationwide as “safe and effective” without adequate data to support these claims. When evidence of adverse effects became apparent globally, there was no cessation of the rollout, nor were there sufficient efforts to inform the public and medical professionals of the potential risks.

The family’s legal actions include a writ petition seeking not only compensation but also the establishment of an independent expert medical board to thoroughly investigate their daughter’s death and share the findings with them. SII, when approached for comment, has chosen to remain silent on the matter.

A senior official from the Covid working group attempted to reassure the public, emphasizing that the Covishield vaccine, which was administered to 90% of India’s vaccinated population, generally performed well despite the rare risk of TTS. Meanwhile, health experts continue to stress the critical role of vaccinations in mitigating the overall impact of the virus on public health.

Govindan warned that the fight for justice was far from over.

“If sufficient remedies aren’t obtained, for the sake of justice and to prevent the recurrence of this atrocity that was perpetrated in the name of public health, we will file fresh cases against any and all of those perpetrators because of whose actions the deaths of our children ensued,”

-he vowed.

“Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Syndrome (TTS) is one of the rare but very serious adverse effects that has happened as part of Vaccine-induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (VITTP). The incidence has been as low as one in 50,000 (0.002 per cent), but in a huge population, the number becomes sizeable,”

-infectious disease expert Dr. Ishwar Gilada, told media.

“TTS is a very rare condition resulting from an abnormal immune response. Although it has several causes, it has also been linked with adenovirus vector vaccines and the WHO published a report on May 27, 2021 about it,”

-Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the Indian Medical Association’s National Covid-19 Task Force, told news agencies.

This case highlights the complex balance between the urgent need for mass vaccination campaigns and the necessity of rigorous safety monitoring and transparency about potential risks.

Although AstraZeneca is contesting the claims “it has accepted, in a legal document submitted to the High Court in February that its Covid vaccine ‘can, in very rare cases, cause TTS'”: a report said.

As the legal proceedings unfold, they will undoubtedly bring more attention to the safety protocols and regulatory oversight of vaccine distribution, especially in emergency health responses.
