KOLKATA: Today(13th sept), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has moved a Sealdah court seeking permission to conduct a narco-analysis test on Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the R G Kar Medical College rape and murder case.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the medical institution. The CBI’s request to the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) court in Sealdah highlights the agency’s intent to uncover critical details in the ongoing investigation.
The CBI is keen to perform a narco-analysis test to verify the accuracy of Roy’s statements regarding the tragic incident.
A senior CBI officer explained the importance of this test, stating-
“This is primarily to cross-check whether Roy is telling the truth. The narco analysis test will help us to verify his version.”
The court’s approval and Roy’s consent, both of which are necessary for the test to proceed, are being sought by the CBI. The hearing on this matter is expected to take place later today. Roy’s consent is crucial because narco-analysis testing cannot be conducted without the approval of the accused.
A narco-analysis test, also known as the “truth serum” test, involves injecting sodium pentothal into the subject’s bloodstream. This drug induces a hypnotic state, effectively neutralizing the subject’s imagination and inhibiting their ability to lie or fabricate information.
The CBI officer elaborated-
“During a narco-analysis test, the subject is injected with sodium pentothal, a drug that induces a hypnotic state and neutralizes their imagination.”
In most cases, the narco-analysis test helps authorities gather critical information by compelling the subject to speak the truth.
“In most cases, the accused gives the true information,”
-the officer added.
The R G Kar Medical College case has attracted widespread attention due to the severity of the crime. The murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor inside the medical institution have shocked the public. Sanjay Roy remains the only person arrested and named in connection with the case, although the CBI has indicated that there may be other individuals involved, suggesting the possibility of a gang rape.
Sources within the CBI confirmed that they are pursuing several questions related to Roy’s involvement, and the narco-analysis test is seen as crucial to uncovering whether Roy was truthful in his prior statements or if he has been deliberately misleading the investigation.
“Sources indicated that through the narco-analysis test, also known as the truth serum test, the CBI aims to assess whether Roy was truthful in his statements and to determine if he is intentionally concealing information or misleading investigators.”
– stated an official familiar with the investigation.
Prior to requesting the narco-analysis test, the CBI had already conducted a polygraph test on Roy inside the Presidency Correctional Home, where Roy has been held since his arrest. The polygraph test, commonly referred to as a lie detector test, was administered on August 24 under the supervision of two CBI officers.
Despite this, further doubts have emerged regarding Roy’s involvement in the case, prompting the CBI to seek additional means of verification through the narco-analysis procedure.
“On August 24, Sanjay Roy underwent a polygraph test inside Presidency Central Jail in the presence of two CBI officers,”
– revealed the source.
One of the primary reasons for the narco-analysis test is to determine whether the incident was a case of gang rape. The CBI suspects that there may be additional individuals involved who have not yet been identified or apprehended.
“Officials aim to verify certain details in Roy’s statement and explore additional questions related to the rape and murder case. They noted that the narco-analysis test is crucial for determining whether the incident involved a gang rape.”
-said the officer.
The CBI took over the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, and since then, they have been working diligently to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.
