A CBI court in Chandigarh on Friday rejected the bail plea of suspended Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who is currently under arrest in a corruption case. The court refused to grant him relief after hearing arguments from both sides and agreed with the prosecution that releasing him on bail could affect the case.

Harcharan Singh Bhullar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on October 16, 2025, along with his alleged aide Kirishanu Sharda. The arrests were made after the CBI found evidence that the two had allegedly demanded a bribe from a complainant in exchange for providing official favours.

The complainant, Akash Batta, who lives in Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib district, submitted a written complaint to the CBI on October 11.

In his complaint, Batta alleged that Bhullar had demanded “illegal gratification” through a middleman to help settle an FIR that was registered against him in 2023 at the Sirhind police station.

The complaint also stated that the bribe was sought to ensure that no “coercive or adverse action” would be taken against Batta’s scrap business in the future.

After receiving the complaint, the CBI conducted a verification of the allegations. Once the claims were found to be credible, the agency laid a trap. During the operation, both Bhullar and Sharda were caught and arrested, and the alleged bribe money was also recovered by the investigating agency.

During the hearing of the bail application, Bhullar’s lawyer, SPS Bhullar, argued before the court that the investigation in the case was already complete.

He submitted that the challan had been filed and claimed that there was no chance of the accused tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses if bail was granted.

However, the CBI strongly opposed the bail plea. Public prosecutor Narender Singh argued that granting bail to Bhullar at this stage would allow him to influence witnesses, considering his senior position in the police force.

After listening to the submissions made by both sides, the CBI court dismissed the bail application and accepted the prosecution’s arguments.

This is not the first time Bhullar has failed to get relief from the courts. Earlier, the same CBI court had rejected his default bail plea in a separate disproportionate assets case.

He had also approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail and a stay on the CBI proceedings, but the apex court refused to grant any relief to him.

At present, suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar remains in judicial custody and is lodged at Burail Jail in Chandigarh.
