The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday has announced its intention to file a supplementary chargesheet by the end of February in the high-profile land-for-jobs case involving former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and their son Tejashwi Yadav, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. This development was communicated to a Delhi court, with the next hearing scheduled for February 27.

The case, which has garnered significant attention, centers around allegations of irregular appointments in the Indian Railways in exchange for land transfers to Lalu Yadav’s family during his tenure as Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009. The CBI’s counsel stated in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court that the investigation is nearing completion, paving the way for the supplementary chargesheet.

In October of the previous year, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Tejashwi Yadav in connection with this case. They had appeared before the CBI special court following the summons issued against them.

The CBI had previously filed a fresh chargesheet against Lalu Yadav and others on July 3 of the same year. This chargesheet outlined “irregular/illegal appointments of candidates in the Central Railways, violating the norms, guidelines, and procedure of railways.” The agency alleged that the selected candidates, either directly or through their immediate relatives or family members, sold land to Lalu Yadav’s family at significantly discounted rates, estimated to be one-fourth to one-fifth of the prevailing market rate.

Furthermore, the CBI accused the RJD chief of entering into a “criminal conspiracy” with his wife Rabri Devi, daughter Misa Bharati, officers of Central Railways, and several others. The chargesheet filed on July 3 was the second in the case, with the first not naming Tejashwi Yadav as an accused. Along with the three family members, the central probe agency named 14 individuals and entities on the charge sheet. The case was initially registered in May 2022.

This case represents a significant moment in Indian politics and law enforcement, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address corruption and irregularities in public office. The upcoming supplementary chargesheet is expected to add further details to the allegations and potentially bring more clarity to the case.
