A Surat court has issued a notice to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over his controversial remark “Brahmin pe mootoonga.” The court acted on a plea claiming the statement hurt religious sentiments and sought Kashyap’s response.

A local court in Surat summoned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap for allegedly making offensive remarks about the Brahmin community in a social media post.
The Surat Judicial Magistrate First Class Court, presided over by Judge A.L. Trivedi, has ordered Kashyap to appear before the court on May 7, accompanied by legal counsel.

Kashyap’s controversial post, shared on April 16, 2025, has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among the Brahmin community. In the wake of the backlash, he deleted the post the following day and issued apology videos on April 17 and 19.
In his original post, Kashyap responded to a social media user by stating,
“Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?) (sic)”
Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Rawal filed the complaint against Anurag Kashyap on April 22.
Speaking to the media, Rawal said,
“On April 16, Kashyap made a derogatory remark about the Brahmin community. When one Aditya Dutta urged him to avoid such comments, Kashyap responded by asking, ‘What have you Brahmins accomplished?’ I have now filed a complaint in the Surat court under BNS sections 196, 197, 351, 352, 353, and 356. After verifying and reviewing all the submitted documents, the court has issued a notice summoning Kashyap to appear on May 7.”

The Surat district court’s notice stated,
“You (Anurag Kashyap) are hereby instructed to appear before the court on May 7, 2025, at 10:45 AM, or through an authorized representative. Failure to do so will result in ex-parte actions.”
Later, In another post on Instagram, Anurag Kashyap said that he truly regrets what he said and admitted that he lost control in anger.
In his own words, “In a moment of anger, I forgot my limits”, and he also said that he was replying to a comment when this happened.
Section 196 BNS (2023):
Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings
- If someone purposely does something, with bad intentions, to insult a religion or religious beliefs of any group, it is punishable.
- Example: Making disrespectful statements about a religion to hurt people’s feelings.
Section 197 BNS (2023):
Promoting enmity between different groups
- If someone tries to create hatred, differences, or tension between groups based on religion, race, caste, language, etc., they can be punished.
- Example: Making statements that provoke fights between two communities.
Section 351 BNS (2023):
Assault
- Assault means any act where a person tries to use force or threatens to use force against another person, intending to cause harm or fear.
- Example: Raising a hand to slap someone even if the slap doesn’t happen.
Section 352 BNS (2023):
Punishment for Assault
- If someone commits an assault (without serious injury), they can be punished with jail time or a fine, or both.
- Example: If someone pushes another person in anger, it is punishable.
Section 353 BNS (2023):
Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty
- If someone uses force or threatens force against a government officer to stop them from doing their official work, it is a crime.
- Example: Threatening a police officer when they try to arrest someone.
Section 356 BNS (2023):
Assault or criminal force in attempt to wrongfully confine a person
- If someone uses force to try to illegally restrict or lock up another person, they are punishable.
- Example: Physically stopping someone from moving freely without lawful reason.
