Anurag Kashyap in Legal Trouble: Surat Court Summons Him Over Brahmin Remarks

Surat (Gujarat), April 25: Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is in big legal trouble after his recent comments about the Brahmin community caused a lot of controversy. A court in Surat has now sent him a legal notice and has asked him to appear before the court on May 7. If he does not follow this order, then the court has warned that more strict legal steps will be taken against him.

The court has also asked that a copy of this legal notice be sent to Anurag Kashyap’s home. This shows that the matter is being taken seriously and the filmmaker may face more legal issues because of what he said.

A lawyer named Kamlesh Rawal is the person who filed the complaint against Anurag Kashyap. He said that the filmmaker will not be forgiven this time. According to Rawal, “Kashyap will not be forgiven for his comments this time,” which clearly shows that a legal battle is about to begin.

The complainant also said that this is not the first time Anurag Kashyap has made comments that have hurt religious feelings. He has been accused of making such remarks in the past too. The lawyer said that Kashyap has tried to create religious tension many times. Old incidents are also being added to this case, like his comments on Hindu society in 2020 and a reported verbal fight with actor Anil Kapoor in 2024.

This latest problem began when Kashyap posted something on social media about the film Phule, a biopic based on the life of social reformer Jyotirao Phule.

He criticized the censorship of the movie, and some people felt that his comments were insulting towards the Brahmin community. This caused many people to get angry, and Kashyap was blamed for trying to hurt religious feelings.

Even though he later said sorry, the lawyer who filed the case has said that this apology is not enough and that Kashyap should face legal action.

On April 16, 2025, Anurag Kashyap made a post on social media that quickly became viral and led to a big issue. In that post, he spoke against the censorship of Phule and said things that were seen by many people as disrespectful to the Brahmin community. These comments caused strong reactions and many people criticized him for spreading hate.

After seeing the criticism, Anurag Kashyap gave a public apology, but the person who filed the case has said that just saying sorry is not enough. They believe that the filmmaker must be punished under the law for his words.

In another post on Instagram, Anurag Kashyap said that he truly regrets what he said and admitted that he lost control in anger. In his own words:
“In a moment of anger, I forgot my limits”, and he also said that he was replying to a comment when this happened.

He also accepted that his words were not correct and said sorry to the Brahmin community.

He added:

“I spoke badly about the entire Brahmin community. That community whose many people have been in my life, are still there and contribute a lot. Today, all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and my way of speaking.”

In this message, Kashyap apologized to his family, his colleagues, and the Brahmin community. He promised that he will try to control his anger and avoid saying such things in the future.

He said:

“I will work on not letting this happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I have to discuss the issue, I will use the correct words. I hope you will forgive me.”

But even after this apology, his problems have not ended. Another complaint has been filed in Indore by a man named Anoop Shukla. He has also accused Kashyap of hurting the religious and social feelings of Brahmins.

In his complaint, he said that what Anurag Kashyap said was not just disrespectful but also meant to create hatred between different communities in the country.

This controversy continues to grow, and legal actions are increasing. Even though Anurag Kashyap has apologized, the matter seems far from being settled, and the coming days may bring more legal trouble for the filmmaker.
