A Kolkata court has restrained BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from making any defamatory statements against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, stating he is “restrained from making any defamatory statements” until August 19 in an interim order.

A court in West Bengal issued an interim order prohibiting Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, from making any “defamatory statements” against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.

This order is effective until August 19.

The ruling was made in response to a civil defamation lawsuit filed by Banerjee, the MP for Diamond Harbour.

The civil judge at Alipore court stated that the case will be reviewed again on August 19.

The civil judge directed in an ex-parte order,

“The defendant is hereby restrained from making any defamatory statements and/or publishing and/or causing to be published and/or causing to be printed and/or causing to be made, orally or in writing, any words defamatory to the plaintiff as on this day till August 19,”

Banerjee claimed that Adhikari made certain defamatory remarks during a press conference at the BJP office on July 26.

The TMC MP sought an interim injunction to prevent the BJP leader from making such statements.

After considering the arguments presented by Banerjee’s lawyer, the judge determined that there is a prima facie case warranting a trial.

The court acknowledged that both individuals, being public figures, have established reputations, but also recognized their ongoing political rivalry.
