BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh asserted an alibi, stating he was not in Delhi during the purported sexual harassment incident involving a female wrestler. Singh made this declaration before the court, denying any involvement in the alleged misconduct.

NEW DELHI: Today (18th April): A Delhi Court deferred its decision on framing charges against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and former President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, in a case involving allegations of sexual harassment made by several women wrestlers.

Singh sought further investigation into the matter and raised the defense of alibi, claiming he was not in Delhi when the alleged incidents occurred. The court is scheduled to announce its decision on April 26.

Background:

Six women wrestlers have accused Singh of sexual harassment, stalking, outraging modesty, and criminal intimidation.
Based on their complaints, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The chargesheet, filed on June 15, 2023, included offenses such as outraging modesty, sexually colored remarks, stalking, and criminal intimidation.

During the court proceedings, Singh presented an alibi, stating that he was not in Delhi when the incidents took place. He requested further investigation to corroborate his claims. The court has reserved its order on Singh’s application. The prosecution opposed Singh’s request, considering it a delaying tactic and an attempt to prolong the legal process.

Prior to the registration of the FIR, the complainants approached the Supreme Court seeking its intervention to ensure the filing of a complaint against Singh. The Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court that an FIR had been registered and the investigation was underway.

Notably, one of the complainants, a minor wrestler, later withdrew her complaint, leading to the Delhi Police filing a cancellation report under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
