Anil Ambani has filed a defamation case in a Delhi court against Cobrapost and The Economic Times for reports alleging a Rs 41,000 crore fraud by his Reliance Group. The case will be heard next on November 17.

Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani has filed a defamation case in a Delhi court against Cobrapost, The Economic Times, The Times of India, and several others for publishing reports that accused his companies of committing a massive financial fraud of over Rs 41,000 crore.

The case was heard on Thursday by Senior Civil Judge Vivek Beniwal at the Karkardooma Courts in Delhi. A detailed order of the proceedings is still awaited, and the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 17.

According to court records, Anil Ambani has named Cobrapost.com, Bennett Coleman and Company Limited (the publishers of The Economic Times and The Times of India), Live Media & Publishers Pvt Ltd, and John Doe (unnamed persons) as the defendants in his defamation suit.

The case is linked to a Cobrapost report dated October 30, which made serious allegations claiming that Ambani’s Reliance Group had committed a financial fraud exceeding Rs 41,921 crore.

The report alleged that this fraud was carried out through the diversion of funds from various Reliance Group companies since 2006.

Following the publication of this report, several other news outlets, including The Economic Times, also carried similar stories highlighting the same allegations.

Anil Ambani has stated before the court that these reports have continued to damage his reputation, arguing that the allegations are baseless and have caused him ongoing defamation.

As the matter stands, the court has taken note of the complaint, and the hearing will continue on November 17, where further directions are expected from Judge Vivek Beniwal regarding Ambani’s defamation plea.

The case marks another major legal battle between a prominent industrialist and media organizations over the limits of investigative reporting and the protection of an individual’s reputation under Indian defamation laws.
