In a significant move, Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha, aiming to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. The move, as reported by Times of India, is seen as a major step towards revamping India’s legal framework.

Amit Shah was quoted saying,

“The laws that are slated for replacement… their original intent was to safeguard and bolster the British administration, with the primary focus being punishment rather than the delivery of justice. Through their substitution, the newly introduced trio of laws aims to prioritize the protection of rights for the citizens of India

emphasizing the need for these reforms to align India’s legal system with contemporary challenges and requirements.

The introduction of these bills has garnered attention from legal experts, policymakers, and the general public, given the profound impact they could have on the country’s judicial processes. The existing IPC, CRPC, and Indian Evidence Act have been in place for several decades, and many believe that an overhaul is long overdue to address the evolving nature of crimes and legal proceedings.

The Lok Sabha will now deliberate on these proposed bills, and if passed, they could mark a historic shift in India’s legal landscape.
