A Delhi court has sought the police’s response on the anticipatory bail plea of Congress MP and JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a sexual harassment case, directing that no action be taken against him till November 5.

New Delhi: A Special Court at the Rouse Avenue Courts on Tuesday sought the Delhi Police’s response on the anticipatory bail plea of Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a case accusing him of sexual harassment, and said no action would be taken against him until the next date of hearing [Angomcha Bimol Akoijam v. State (NCT of Delhi)].
Special Judge Digvinay Singh listed the matter for further consideration on November 5, 2026, and directed the investigating officer to appear with the case file on that date.
The background
Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, was a professor at JNU’s School of Social Sciences. The university dismissed him from service on October 9 after its Internal Complaints Committee inquired into complaints by several female students, who alleged that he invited them to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings and attempted to sexually harass them, and that he made inappropriate remarks in class.
The termination order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, stated that the punishment was imposed after due process and consideration of the committee’s report. Akoijam has denied the allegations.
The High Court stay
A day earlier, on November 2, the Delhi High Court stayed JNU’s decision to terminate his services and issued notice on his challenge to the dismissal. The anticipatory bail plea relates to the criminal case, which is separate from the service dispute before the High Court.
The allegations are untested. The court has expressed no view on the merits, and Akoijam is entitled to the presumption of innocence. The complainants are not identified.
Why the order matters
Interim protection pending a reply is a routine step in anticipatory bail proceedings under Section 482 of the BNSS, allowing the court to hear the prosecution before deciding. The direction to produce the case file signals that the court will examine the investigation material before ruling.
The case runs on two tracks: a service challenge before the High Court and a criminal case before the Special Court. Each will be decided on its own record.
