A Delhi court granted bail to Indian Youth Congress (IYC) President Uday Bhanu Chib in the case arising from shirtless protests at the India AI Impact Summit.

The duty magistrate at Patiala House Court issued the order.

Chib had been brought before the court by Delhi Police early Saturday as they sought a seven-day extension of his remand, but the court found no grounds to prolong his custody. Instead, the judge allowed his bail application and ordered his release on bail.

Chib was first taken into custody for questioning on February 23 and was formally arrested the following morning. He was subsequently remanded to police custody for four days.

Earlier, On February 20, members of the IYC staged a shirtless protest inside the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam.

Several activists entered the venue, some removing their shirts to reveal T-shirts bearing slogans like “PM is compromised” and criticisms of the India-US trade deal, before chanting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and government policies.

Police have, so far, made fourteen arrests in connection with the incident, accusing those arrested of breaching security and raising alleged “anti-national slogans” at the venue.

The case concerns protests by Indian Youth Congress members at the AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Delhi Police say the investigation has been handed over to the Crime Branch, with the Inter-State Crime Branch now taking charge of further inquiries.

Separately, Judicial Magistrate Ravi of Patiala House Court, in an order dated February 21, remanded Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Ajay Kumar and Narasimha Yadav to five days’ police custody and denied their bail applications.

The four were arrested over their involvement in the February 20 protest at the summit.

Delhi Police allege the group breached security at the high-profile international event, raised “anti-national” slogans, obstructed public servants performing their duties and assaulted police officers, resulting in injuries.

In a strongly worded ruling, the magistrate reportedly found that the accused had carried out a “premeditated intrusion” into the high-security precincts of Bharat Mandapam, noting that they wore provocative T-shirts, chanted incendiary slogans and impeded officials on duty.
