A Bengaluru court has reserved its order till October 9 on actor Darshan’s petition over jail facilities in the Renukaswamy murder case. The hearing saw sharp exchanges between his lawyer, the prosecutor, and the judge.
Bengaluru: A sessions court in Bengaluru has reserved its order till October 9 on a petition regarding the prison facilities given to Kannada actor Darshan, who is currently lodged in jail as an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case.
During the hearing on Tuesday, the 57th Sessions Court was presented with a report by jail authorities, after which both sides argued their case in detail.
Actor Darshan’s lawyer, advocate Sunil, urged the court to shift the actor to another cell, arguing that the restrictions imposed on him inside the jail were unnecessary and excessive.
Raising questions about the way Darshan was being treated compared to others, he asked,
“Many VIPs have been imprisoned. Were they all given the same kind of security? Why is so much security only for Darshan?”
He further questioned the decision to keep Darshan in a quarantine cell for 45 days, pointing out that the jail manual specifies only 14 days. Sunil also referred to the facilities given to other inmates in the past, stating,
“Look at the facilities Umesh Reddy (convicted rapist) was given — luxurious ones. If needed, I can produce documents.”
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Prasanna Kumar strongly opposed the plea and asked the defense to be direct and clear about what they were demanding.
He told the court,
“My dear friend, just tell us what facilities you want. We are already providing what is required. Why all this argument beyond that?”
At this point, the judge intervened and asked the actor’s lawyer to keep his arguments short and to the point.
The judge observed,
“Ask for what you want. We don’t have time for this; there is other work pending.”
In response, Sunil argued that the prison authorities were creating rules that were not actually present in the jail manual. He stressed that the word “quarantine” itself was not part of the manual.
He told the court,
“If that word was there, I would have withdrawn the case right away.”
Countering this argument, the Special Public Prosecutor clarified that the term was indeed mentioned, stating, “quarantine” appears in the manual.
After listening to both sides, the court decided to reserve its order and will pronounce the decision on October 9.
