Former MLA Abbas Ansari, son of jailed gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been sentenced to two years in jail by the MP/MLA court in a hate speech case related to the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Uttar Pradesh, June 10, 2025 — Abbas Ansari had filed an appeal to put a hold on the court’s verdict. However, since the government lawyer requested additional time to submit a written objection, the hearing has now been rescheduled for June 21, 2025.

Former MLA Abbas Ansari, son of jailed gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been sentenced to two years in jail by the MP/MLA court in a hate speech case related to the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Abbas Ansari was found guilty of making inflammatory and threatening remarks during a public rally in Pahadpur on March 3, 2022, and was convicted by the court on May 31, 2025. Following this conviction, he lost his MLA seat, and the Mau Sadar constituency has now been declared vacant.

Ansari’s lawyer Daroga Singh confirmed that an appeal was filed before the District and Sessions Judge seeking a stay on the execution of the sentence. The appeal was filed on Monday, and the matter was to be heard on June 10, 2025.

However, during the hearing, the government lawyer sought more time to file a written objection to the appeal. As a result, the court has rescheduled the next hearing to June 21, 2025.

Till then, Abbas Ansari will remain out on interim bail.

“On May 31, he was sentenced to 2 years and fined some rupees in the MP MLA court, for which an objection was filed, its hearing was to be held today but the government lawyer asked for time from the court to file a written objection,” said lawyer Daroga Singh.

“After this, the court has fixed the date of June 21, 2025 and on the said date, Bind Kumar has also been asked to appear in the court for accountability.”

After the appeal was filed, District Judge Sunil Kumar directed that notices be issued to the respondents. The case was then transferred to Special Judge (MP/MLA Court) Rajeev Kumar Vats for hearing.

According to the prosecution, Abbas Ansari, then contesting the assembly elections from Mau Sadar on an SBSP ticket, made provocative remarks during his rally. He had allegedly threatened government officials, stating:

“Teach the Mau administration a lesson” — a statement seen as intimidating and inciting public anger against state authorities.

This remark led to an FIR being lodged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including:

A senior Assembly official confirmed to the press that Abbas Ansari’s legislative membership had been terminated after the conviction. This effectively ends his term as an MLA just three years after his debut election win in 2022.

Ansari had won the Mau Sadar seat in the 2022 elections representing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which was then part of the Samajwadi Party-led alliance. Interestingly, the SBSP is now aligned with the ruling BJP-led government, and its president currently holds a cabinet post in Uttar Pradesh.

Before Abbas, the Mau Sadar seat was held five times in a row by his father, Mukhtar Ansari, from 1996 to 2017. Abbas’s conviction marks a major turning point for the family’s long-standing political influence in the region.
