Supreme Court Recalls Order in MLA Abbas Ansari Case | Big Twist in Gangsters Act Probe

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Friday withdrew its earlier order that had asked the police to finish their investigation against MLA Abbas Ansari within 10 days.

Instead, the court wanted to confirm if any investigation was still pending against him.

EARLIER TODAY IN APEX COURT

The Supreme Court of India earlier today asked the Uttar Pradesh police to complete their investigation against MLA Abbas Ansari within 10 days in a case under the Gangsters Act.

The court made this decision on Friday.

Bail Plea to Be Considered After Investigation

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said that the court will decide on Abbas Ansari’s bail plea only after the investigation is over.

Ansari Wanted Virtual Appearance Due to Fear of Encounter

On January 31, 2025, Ansari requested to attend his trial court hearing virtually because he was afraid of a police encounter.

Allahabad High Court Rejected Bail in December 2024

Earlier, on December 18, 2024, the Allahabad High Court had rejected Ansari’s bail application.

The court noted that Ansari and some others were accused of forming a gang to gain financial and other illegal benefits.

Case Details and Charges

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on August 31, 2024, at the Kotwali Karvi Police Station in Chitrakoot district.

The case was filed under Sections 2 and 3 of the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.

Who is Abbas Ansari?

Abbas Ansari is an MLA from the Mau constituency.

He represents the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

The Allahabad High Court had earlier stated that the investigation was still ongoing and denied bail. Later, Abbas Ansari was arrested on September 6, 2024.

The Supreme Court’s latest order means that the UP police must complete the investigation within 10 days, after which the court will decide on his bail plea.
