Hisar, Haryana: Today, On May 26, Jyoti Malhotra, a 33-year-old travel vlogger who ran the YouTube channel “Travel with JO”, has been sent to jail by a court in Hisar on Monday.

She was earlier arrested on suspicion of being involved in a spy network and had been in police custody. Her police remand has now ended, and the court has ordered that she be kept in judicial custody. The police had produced Jyoti in court after her remand period ended.

A police spokesperson said,

“They did not seek her further remand after which the court sent her to jail.”

This means the police didn’t ask the court for more time to keep her in their custody, and so she was sent to jail instead.

Police sources confirmed that forensic experts have successfully recovered a huge amount of data from her devices.

They had earlier sent three of her mobile phones and a laptop for examination. On Monday, police sources said,

“Nearly 10-12 terabytes of data has been recovered. Further investigation in this regard is under progress.”

This data is now being studied to check for any information related to the alleged espionage activities.

Apart from examining her devices, authorities are also checking her bank details.

She has four bank accounts, and officials are reviewing her financial transactions to understand if any suspicious activity has taken place.

Jyoti Malhotra was arrested recently from New Aggarsain Extension in Hisar. She has been booked under serious charges that fall under the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the Indian Penal Code.

These laws deal with crimes that threaten national security, such as spying or leaking sensitive information.

Earlier, when her five-day police remand ended, the court extended it by another four days. Now that those four days are over, she has been moved to jail.

Jyoti is one of the 12 people who have been arrested over the past three weeks across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

All of them are suspected to be involved in a spying ring, and investigators believe that there might be a Pakistan-linked spy network operating in northern India.

Police had said that although there is no proof that Jyoti had access to any confidential military or defence-related information,

“She was definitely in contact with some people, knowing that they were Pakistani intelligence operatives.”

Further details revealed by police sources show that Jyoti was in communication with a man named Ehsan-ur-Rahim, who also went by the name Danish.

He worked at the Pakistani High Commission and was believed to be involved in espionage activities.

“Police sources had said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023.”

The Indian government expelled Danish on May 13, accusing him of spying.

“India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage.”

Due to the serious nature of the case, agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and military intelligence have also joined the investigation and have questioned Jyoti.

The investigation further revealed that Jyoti had travelled to several countries, including Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh.

During one of the most sensitive times — the military conflict between India and Pakistan following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam — she was allegedly still in contact with the Pakistani operative Danish.

“She was also allegedly in touch with Danish during the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan that followed the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, they had said.”

The investigation into Jyoti Malhotra’s activities is still ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as authorities study the data recovered from her electronic devices and financial records.
