Kolkata: The father of the doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking to overturn a lower court order that denied permission for his lawyers to inspect the crime scene.

The petitioner firmly believes that

“other persons were present along with Sanjay Roy, who has been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment till the end of his natural life by the trial court for the rape and murder of the doctor,”

at the time the crime took place on August 9 last year.

According to the petitioner’s counsel, the case is expected to be heard early next week before a single bench of the Calcutta High Court.

The petitioner emphasized that

“to assist the court in discovering any material lapse in investigation, it is crucial for an independent examination of the place of occurrence.”

The father has requested that his lawyer Phiroze Edulji, accompanied by six junior advocates, be allowed to visit the crime scene at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital for two hours to examine the location and gather evidence. He specifically prayed that the Sealdah court order of July 9, which had refused this permission, be set aside.

The horrific incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when the body of the on-duty doctor was found in the seminar room of R G Kar Hospital in North Kolkata, sparking widespread protests across the country.

Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the city police, was convicted by the Sealdah sessions court and sentenced to imprisonment till the end of his natural life for his role in the crime.

The petitioner’s move highlights a strong demand for a thorough review of the investigation and aims to ensure that no potential evidence or lapses are overlooked. Allowing independent access to the crime scene could provide critical insights into the case, according to his legal team.
