NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India has declared that the Vice Presidential elections will be held on September 9, 2025. This crucial constitutional process marks the selection of the country’s second-highest constitutional authority, and political activity is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks.

Important dates are:

  • Notification Date: August 7, 2025
  • Last Date for Filing Nominations: August 21, 2025
  • Scrutiny of Nominations: August 22, 2025
  • Last Date for Withdrawal of Candidature: August 24, 2025
  • Date of Polling (if required): September 9, 2025
  • Counting of Votes (if needed): Same day, after polling ends

Background: Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns as Vice President

On July 21, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar officially resigned from his post, citing health-related reasons. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Mr. Dhankhar explained that his decision to step down was guided by medical advice and the need to prioritise his well-being.

His resignation comes into effect immediately under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, which deals with the resignation of the Vice President.

On 22nd July 2025, the Government of India officially released a notification in the Gazette of India confirming that Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the post of Vice President of India.

His resignation, dated 21st July 2025, was accepted and made public by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the authority of Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.

The notification was published by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the signature of Govind Mohan, Home Secretary, with the reference number [F.No. 2/4/2025-Public].
