Chandigarh: The Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant emphasized the crucial role of technology in modernizing the judicial system, stating that the integration of digital tools has provided an essential interface between digitalization and judicial processes.
Justice Kant made these remarks during the valedictory ceremony of the ‘National Conference on the Landscape of Technology in Courts in India and the Way Forward’. He highlighted how technology has helped bridge the gap between rural and urban areas, allowing citizens in remote regions to access efficient, effective and speedy justice through the use of digital solutions.
The conference provided a platform for participants to analyze the progress made so far in the ongoing digitization of courts across India, and identify areas that still require attention. The discussions went beyond theoretical concepts to include practical demonstrations of innovative technological practices being implemented by various high courts.
Justice Kant emphasized that the ultimate goal of technology is to serve as a tool to achieve justice and fairness. He also inaugurated several key initiatives, including a new advanced software development lab, an e-Gate pass facility, and three thematic murals, all through a virtual platform.
Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal stressed the need for regular national conferences on judicial technology, advocating for annual events or virtual meetings to keep the judiciary updated on the latest advancements. He highlighted the benefits of tools like the e-prison system and the Adalat IN app, which have streamlined prison record management and improved citizens’ access to court services, respectively.
Justice Augustine George Masih discussed the transformative impact of technology and artificial intelligence on the judiciary, noting their role in automating tasks, improving case management and reducing case backlogs. He emphasized that these advancements are fundamentally reshaping the judiciary, making it more efficient and responsive to public needs.
