AHMEDABAD: A shocking incident shook Surat city on Thursday night when senior lawyer and former Surat Congress legal convener, Advocate Feroz Pathan, ended his life by jumping into the Tapi river.

Feroz Pathan, who had earlier represented Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, was known as a respected face in the legal fraternity. He was reportedly under severe stress due to family disputes and heavy financial troubles.

According to police, the incident happened at around 11 pm near the cable bridge on the Tapi river. Hours later, his body was recovered on Friday morning from Ubharat beach, miles away from the spot where he had jumped.

The news spread quickly, leaving lawyers and colleagues in Surat shocked and deeply saddened. Many described him as a sharp legal mind who had recently been struggling with depression.

Before taking the extreme step, Advocate Feroz Pathan made a phone call to his junior lawyer, Deepak. In that call, he said,

“If anything happens to me, come to the bridge near the court.”

Deepak later shared that he was disturbed after hearing this. He immediately asked Pathan if he was in the office at that time.

Feroz calmly replied,

“I was.”

When Deepak rushed to the office to check on him, he found it empty. Feeling something was wrong, he quickly informed Feroz’s son and headed straight towards the cable bridge.

There, he found a crowd gathered near the river and Feroz’s car parked under the bridge, confirming everyone’s fears.

Police teams, along with the fire department, immediately started a search operation in the strong currents of the Tapi river.

The search continued throughout the night. Early next morning, the efforts ended in tragedy when Feroz’s body was found washed ashore on Ubharat beach.

Friends and colleagues said Feroz had been going through a very difficult time in recent months. They revealed that he was weighed down by property loans, domestic disputes, and financial stress, which had pushed him into depression. These personal struggles had taken a heavy toll on his mental health.

The timing of this tragedy has added even more sadness, as it happened on the day of Eid Milad, a festival otherwise marked with celebration. Instead, the news of his death brought deep sorrow to Surat’s legal community and his family members.

Police have begun further investigations into the case, but early findings suggest it was a suicide linked to financial and personal struggles.

Advocate Feroz Pathan is being remembered by his colleagues and friends as a committed lawyer and a respected member of the legal circle whose life came to a heartbreaking end.
