NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the new flag and insignia of the Supreme Court in a significant event marking the 75th anniversary of its establishment. The newly designed flag and insignia, which embody the ideals of justice and democracy, were conceptualized and created by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Delhi.

The flag will be available in various forms, including cross table flat, single table flag, pole flag, and wooden frame, ensuring its widespread presence across different settings.

During the valedictory session of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud presented a meaningful gesture, described as a “special green gift,” to President Murmu.

As a tribute to the Supreme Court’s 75-year journey, 75 saplings representing 12 different indigenous varieties from Delhi’s Central Ridge Reserve forest area were planted. These saplings have been dedicated to President Murmu as a commemoration of the Supreme Court’s milestone anniversary and as a mark of respect for her, recognizing her as “a shining example of simplicity and humility.”

In her address at the valedictory session of the National Conference of District Judiciary, which was organized by the Supreme Court, President Murmu emphasized the Court’s invaluable role, stating,

“The Supreme Court has made an invaluable contribution as a vigilant sentinel of the judicial system of the world’s largest democracy.”

She further added that

“Indian jurisprudence has a very respectable place because of the Supreme Court.”

President Murmu lauded the various initiatives undertaken by the Supreme Court to commemorate its 75th anniversary, acknowledging that these programs

“have increased people’s trust and attachment towards our judicial system.”

Reiterating the reverence with which the judiciary is held, President Murmu noted,

“significant improvements in the availability of infrastructure, facilities, training, and human resources of the judiciary at the district level, and a lot remains to be done in all these areas.”

She identified-

“Pendency and backlog of cases as a ‘big challenge before the judiciary,’ some cases have remained unresolved for over 32 years.”

To address this, President Murmu emphasized the importance of organizing programs like special Lok Adalat weeks more frequently to tackle the issue of pending cases.

She also suggested the need for arrangements that would

“provide justice in the local language and local conditions,”

-aiming to bring justice closer to the people.

Furthermore, she called for greater collaboration among the judiciary, government, and police administration, stating,

“The judiciary, government, and police administration should work together to find solutions to issues related to evidence and witnesses.”
