In a resolution published on its official website, the Collegium has proposed the appointment of three High Court judges as Chief Justices of the Patna, Meghalaya, and Manipur High Courts.
The Supreme Court Collegium, consisting of the Chief Justice of India and the four senior-most judges of the apex court, is entrusted with the selection and recommendation of judges for higher judiciary appointments. The Collegium evaluates the merit, seniority, and integrity of judges before forwarding its recommendations to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice. The Ministry then processes the recommendations, after which the appointments are made official by the President of India.
Collegium’s Resolutions
1. Justice P. B. Bajanthri for Patna High Court:
Justice P. B. Bajanthri, currently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, has been recommended for appointment as its permanent Chief Justice. His parent High Court is the Karnataka High Court.
The Collegium noted that the office of the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court has been vacant for a considerable period, leading to Justice Bajanthri’s interim leadership as Acting Chief Justice. Recognizing his experience, integrity, and suitability, the Collegium concluded that Justice Bajanthri is fit for permanent appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Patna.
2. Justice Soumen Sen for Meghalaya High Court:
Justice Soumen Sen, a senior puisne judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been recommended for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. He was appointed to the Calcutta High Court in April 2011 and has since garnered substantial judicial experience.
The Collegium emphasized his competence and found him to be fit and suitable in all respects to lead the Meghalaya High Court, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the previous Chief Justice.
3. Justice M. Sundar for Manipur High Court:
Justice M. Sundar of the Madras High Court has been proposed for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. He has been serving as a judge since June 2016.
With the impending retirement of the current Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, the Collegium highlighted Justice Sundar’s professional competence and integrity, deeming him suitable for the position.
The Collegium’s recommendations have been formally transmitted to the Union Government. The Ministry of Law and Justice will review and process these names, following which the President of India will issue the official warrants of appointment.
These appointments, once formalized, will strengthen judicial leadership in Patna, Meghalaya, and Manipur High Courts, ensuring continuity and stability in the functioning of the higher judiciary.
