The recommendation was made during the Collegium’s meeting held on April 15, 2025. A formal statement issued thereafter confirmed:
“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on April 15, 2025 has approved the proposal for appointment of Shri Justice Subhendu Samanta, Additional Judge as Permanent Judge in the High Court at Calcutta.”
Justice Samanta, born on November 25, 1971, was initially appointed as an Additional Judge on May 18, 2022. With over two years on the bench, his appointment as a permanent judge marks a recognition of his judicial contributions and reinforces stability within the court’s functioning.

This move comes at a crucial time, as the Calcutta High Court is currently operating with only 45 judges, significantly short of its sanctioned strength of 72. The resulting vacancy of 27 positions has placed a strain on the judicial workload and efficiency.
