CJI Surya Kant Constitutes Special Vacation Bench: Supreme Court To Hear Urgent Matters On December 22

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant will preside over a special vacation bench of the Supreme Court on December 22, 2025, to hear urgent matters requiring immediate judicial intervention during the court’s Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to the cause list uploaded on the Supreme Court’s official website, the special vacation bench will comprise CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi. The bench is scheduled to assemble at 11:00 am and will take up 17 urgent cases, including both criminal and civil matters.

In an official statement, the apex court said:

“The Chief Justice of India has constituted a Special Vacation Bench to hear urgent matters during the ongoing court vacation. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, is scheduled to sit on Monday, December 22, 2025.”

The move aims to ensure the timely adjudication of pressing cases during the period when the Supreme Court remains officially closed.

The Supreme Court will remain closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays from December 22, 2025, to January 2, 2026. Despite the vacation, the CJI’s decision to hold a special sitting reflects the judiciary’s commitment to addressing urgent legal issues without delay.

On Friday, while hearing urgent mentions of cases, CJI Surya Kant expressed his willingness to sit on December 22, which coincides with the first day of the court’s winter vacation.

The Chief Justice, who was sitting alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, clarified that the Supreme Court registry will scrutinize the urgency of cases before listing them.

“We will sit on Monday. We are not going to burden other Supreme Court judges, who have to study case files till late at night to hear new cases. I will not bother any other bench,”

the CJI said.

He further added that the number of benches constituted would depend on the volume of urgent cases listed.

The CJI-led bench also directed junior lawyers who sought urgent listing of matters to personally argue their cases on December 22.

“We will hear this case on Monday only if you argue your matter,”

the CJI told a junior advocate.
