Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah suspends top cops and confirms arrest of RCB, KSCA, and event officials after 11 die in stampede at IPL celebration. One-man judicial panel led by Justice D’Cunha to submit report in 30 days.
In a major development following the tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL victory celebration at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced the formation of a one-man judicial commission.
The stampede led to the death of 11 people and left 56 others injured.
The Chief Minister confirmed that retired High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha will lead the inquiry.
Speaking at a press conference, CM Siddaramaiah said,
“Under the chairmanship of Justice Michael D’Cunha, a retired judge of the High Court, we have appointed a one-man commission…”
He also added that the commission will file its report within 30 days.
Highlighting the accountability of those involved in the event’s organisation and security, the CM declared that arrests will be made.
He said,
“On RCB, event manager DNA, KSCA, who represented them, we have taken a decision to arrest them.”
The Chief Minister also revealed that senior police officials have been suspended in response to the stampede.
These include top officers from the Bengaluru Police. Siddaramaiah stated,
“Cubbon Park Police Station Police Inspector, Station House Master, Station House Officer, ACP, Central Division DCP, Cricket Stadium in-charge, Additional Commissioner of Police, Commissioner of Police have been suspended with immediate effect,”
Meanwhile, an FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at the Cubbon Park Police Station against the RCB franchise, event management company DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee.
The FIR accuses them of criminal negligence under multiple sections of the Karnataka Police Act and the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 105, 125(1)(2), 132, 121/1, and 190 read with 3(5).
This case has triggered widespread public concern and media attention over the lack of proper crowd management and safety measures during large-scale public events.
The decision to arrest the key stakeholders and the formation of a judicial inquiry indicate the seriousness with which the state government is treating the incident.
The investigation is expected to focus on how permissions were granted, crowd control measures, responsibility of RCB and KSCA in managing the crowd, and the role of event manager DNA in organizing the celebration event that turned tragic.
