Kapil Sibal, a prominent figure in India’s legal landscape, has had a significant legal and political career.
He has served as a Member of Parliament and held various ministerial roles in the government. Notably, Sibal has previously served as the President of the SCBA on multiple occasions during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The SCBA elections this year are particularly notable due to the Supreme Court’s recent directive ensuring a minimum of one-third representation of women in the SCBA’s posts, including the executive committee positions. This initiative begins with the Treasurer’s post for the 2024-25 term, which will be exclusively reserved for a woman candidate.
Kapil Sibal’s legal career is distinguished by his long-standing practice in the Supreme Court of India and his representation of high-profile cases. His departure from the Indian National Congress in 2022 to run as an independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha, supported by the Samajwadi Party, marks a significant shift in his political journey, aligning with his ongoing advocacy for judicial and electoral reforms in India.
Kapil Sibal is re-entering the race for the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) after more than two decades, with his last term ending in 2001-2002. He has also held the position in previous terms during 1995-1996 and 1997-1998.
The upcoming SCBA elections are scheduled for May 16, where positions such as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be determined. Candidates interested in these roles must submit their nominations by May 9.
Senior Advocate Adish Aggarwala currently presides as the SCBA President.
The SCBA, under the new electoral rules set by the Supreme Court, is poised for substantial changes, aiming for more inclusive representation within its governing body. The election results, scheduled to be announced on May 19, 2024, are highly anticipated.
