In a shocking incident, senior lawyer Bailin Das brutally assaulted junior advocate Shyamili in Thiruvananthapuram. The Bar Council has banned him from court pending disciplinary action.
In a shocking incident in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a junior woman lawyer named V. Shyamili was allegedly beaten up brutally by her senior, Advocate Beylin Das, inside his office near the Vanchiyoor District Court.
This disturbing incident took place on Tuesday and has sparked outrage among the legal community, public, and political leaders.
According to police, Shyamili, who is from Kottavila Puthuvalputhan House in Parasala, suffered serious injuries on her face and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Later, she filed a formal complaint against Advocate Beylin Das with the Vanchiyoor police.
The police have registered a case against the senior advocate under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including non-bailable offences.
While speaking to the media, Shyamili recounted the terrifying assault in detail.
She said,
“I went to speak to him personally about the issue. But he got enraged and beat me on the face. I fell, but he continued hitting me two or three more times in front of others. I lost consciousness.”
She further said that her senior often shouted at junior lawyers without any reason and had a habit of behaving violently in the workplace.
She added that this incident happened when she approached him about an internal issue and her unfair dismissal from work.
The assault was so brutal that her face got disfigured. Reports say she was slapped repeatedly with hands and even beaten using a mop stick.

Her right eye and jaw were severely injured, and she suffered a minor fracture below the eye. It was also revealed that Shyamili is the mother of a six-month-old baby.
She further alleged,
“Das often lashed out at his juniors over trivial issues,”
and added that
“he had a history of throwing files at juniors and dismissing them over minor issues.”
Soon after the incident, the Bar Association members visited her at the hospital and expressed full support. They informed the public that immediate action had been taken against Advocate Das.

A representative said,
“As soon as we heard about the incident, we convened an emergency meeting and decided to suspend Beylin Das from the Association.”
He also added,
“We will also conduct an internal investigation. The entire legal fraternity in the district stands with the victim.”
Meanwhile, the Vanchiyoor Police confirmed that strong legal action is being taken against the accused.
A senior officer said,
“Non-bailable sections have been charged against the lawyer. A search is on to nab him. We are looking into it.”
Advocate Beylin Das is currently absconding, and he has not given any public statement so far.
The Bar Council of Kerala has also stepped in and banned Advocate Beylin Das from appearing in court until the disciplinary committee completes its inquiry.
A show-cause notice has been issued to him, and further decisions will be taken based on the findings of the Bar Council’s disciplinary committee.
Bar Council Chairman TS Ajith addressed concerns and stated,
“The allegation that Bar Council office bearers helped the lawyer is baseless and that the incident was something unusual.”
The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) strongly condemned the attack. They held a protest march in the city and demanded immediate justice.
AIDWA has also urged the court to take suo-motu action and called for the intervention of both the State Human Rights Commission and the Youth Commission.
Law Minister P. Rajeev visited Shyamili at the hospital and described the incident as extremely serious.
He said,
“The incident of brutally beating a junior advocate is serious,” and noted that “this is something that has never been heard of before in Kerala.”
This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and dignity of young legal professionals in the workplace, especially women.
