BREAKING | RG Kar Rape-Murder: President Murmu Responds After Family’s Repeated Pleas For Justice Amid Ongoing Protests

KOLKATA: The tragic incident at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata continues to haunt the city and the nation at large. The brutal rape and murder of an on-duty doctor shook the conscience of India last year, sparking outrage, protests, and demands for justice. Yet, more than a year later, the victim’s family is still navigating the painful struggle of ensuring accountability and fairness in the case.

On Thursday, the father of the victim revealed that the family finally received an acknowledgment from the office of President Droupadi Murmu. For months, the family had been writing letters and emails to constitutional authorities, urging their intervention in the investigation and legal process. After repeated efforts, the President’s office replied, assuring them that the Secretary would be in touch to address their concerns.

This acknowledgment, though delayed, has offered a glimmer of hope to the grieving family. “They have informed us that the Secretary will be in touch with us and will try to sort out our problems,” the father said.

The journey for justice has not been easy. On the first year of the crime, August 9, the victim’s mother reportedly suffered a head injury during police action against protestors marching towards the state secretariat, Nabanna. Her health now prevents her from joining large gatherings, but the family remains committed to supporting ongoing movements seeking justice.

On August 14, a ‘Reclaim the Night’ agitation was called, demanding justice for the young doctor. The family confirmed they would participate in a smaller rally near their home to show solidarity, even if unable to join the larger protests.

A day after the horrific crime, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the case. Later, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe, citing the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter.

In January this year, the trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death. However, the CBI is still pursuing the conspiracy angle, investigating whether others were involved in shielding or abetting the crime.

The victim’s family has consistently alleged lapses in the handling of the case. Their appeals highlight the challenges that victims’ families face when navigating India’s complex criminal justice system. From alleged mishandling by local authorities to delays in official acknowledgment of their grievances, the case raises serious questions about accountability and institutional support for victims of sexual violence.
