Supreme Court Registrar urges quick allotment of a VIP number for ex-CJI D Y Chandrachud’s new Mercedes. Says, “Shall be grateful if the number is allotted at the earliest and the undersigned is informed.”
The Registrar of the Supreme Court has sent a letter to the Transport Commissioner requesting the quick allotment of a specific registration number for the newly acquired Mercedes car of retired Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud.
This request was conveyed in a letter dated July 28 from the Deputy Registrar (Transport) to the Delhi Transport Commissioner.
The letter states,
“I request you to kindly allot the registration number ‘XX XX XXXX’ for the Mercedes-Benz E220 car purchased by the Hon’ble Former Chief Justice of India, Justice D Y Chandrachud.”
It further adds,
“I shall be grateful if the above registration number is allotted at the earliest and the undersigned is informed accordingly.”

Justice D Y Chandrachud’s tenure as the 50th Chief Justice of India concluded on November 10, 2024. Throughout his two-year term, he delivered transformative judgments and implemented significant reforms, leaving a remarkable legacy in the country’s judicial history.
He was involved in landmark cases such as the Ayodhya land dispute, the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, and the decriminalization of consensual same-sex relations decisions that have reshaped both society and politics.
Additionally, he participated in 38 Constitution Benches during his eight years as a Supreme Court judge.
