Justice Kureshi’s contributions resonate strongly with the principles of ethical conduct and professional excellence.

Retired High Court judge Justice Akil Kureshi emphasized the importance of preserving the essence of India, which is marked by unity in diversity. He noted that during his upbringing, there a prevalent sense of nationalism, evolving into a more modern, liberal, and scientifically oriented idea of India.

He remarked,

“Unity in diversity is as crucial as ever in today’s India. I urge law students to ensure the preservation of this fundamental idea of our nation.”

He honored with the ‘SGS Award for Ethics in the Legal Profession.’

The SGS award bestowed upon Justice Kureshi in honor of the renowned lawyer and former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, S Govind Swaminadhan.

Reflecting on his journey as a judge, Justice Kureshi expressed his commitment to prioritizing ethics and independence from the outset.

He affirmed,

“When I took on the role of a judge, I pledged to uphold a standard where, upon leaving office, people may not say, ‘He was a great judge,’ but they should affirm, ‘He was an ethical and independent judge,'”

Justice Kureshi delved into areas within the judiciary that necessitate refinement, particularly highlighting concerns with the Collegium system. He explained why disclosing reasons for rejecting a candidate’s elevation could negatively impact their professional standing.

He observed,

“However, I have consistently opposed this practice. Consider the impact on a lawyer’s career when such reasons are made public,”

The former judge critiqued the limitations of a small group of judges in understanding the nuances of the Collegium system, advocating for reforms. He proposed a platform involving former judges, social activists, and individuals with electoral politics backgrounds to debate and improve the system.

Expressing worry over human rights violations and courts’ hesitancy to protect couples’ lives based on moral judgments, Justice Kureshi voiced his concerns.

He remarked,

“I am troubled by instances where courts neglect human rights violations or fail to protect couples because of perceived immorality in their relationships,”

Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in societal change, stating,

“Ultimately, we must question if we have led a righteous life? The answer should not come from within but from others’ perspectives.”
