NU aims to invite Supreme Court Judge Justice Bhushan Gavai, who is set to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in May, to inaugurate the park, which is situated at his alma mater.

Nagpur: Nagpur University (NU) has set a target to complete the long-delayed Samvidhan Park at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, located on Amravati Road, by the first week of March. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to expedite the remaining work.
NU aims to invite Supreme Court Judge Justice Bhushan Gavai, who is set to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in May, to inaugurate the park, which is situated at his alma mater.
Vice-Chancellor Prashant Bokare shared insights into the planning process, stating, “The park will be completed by March, and we are working on a plan to make this event memorable by having the next CJI, a Nagpur native, inaugurate it.”
Bokare also revealed that the university initially wanted the park to open on April 14, aligning with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. However, the proposal to invite Justice Bhushan Gavai is being considered as an exceptional honour.
He explained, “We had planned to open the park on Dr Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. However, inviting Justice Gavai to inaugurate it would make the occasion highly significant.”
During a Senate meeting, member Omprakash Chimmankar urged the administration to finalize the inauguration date.
Responding to this, Bokare shared the university’s ambitious vision, saying,
“We are working on a plan to make this event memorable by having the next CJI, a Nagpur native, inaugurate it.”
Samvidhan Park is a multi-crore project conceptualized to honor Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s contribution to the Indian Constitution. The park includes:
- A 7.5-ft statue of Dr. Ambedkar.
- Replicas of the Supreme Court and the Indian Parliament.
- An amphitheater for public events and discussions.
- Intricate murals celebrating the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
The project faced delays due to the incomplete construction of an aesthetic gate and the compound wall.
Samvidhan Park was envisioned in 2016 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The foundation stone (bhoomipujan) was laid by the then Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Constitution Day in 2019. However, the project has been plagued by delays, extending its completion timeline to nearly eight years.
The university is determined to deliver a world-class facility dedicated to Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
Bokare expressed optimism about the completion, reiterating, “The park will be completed by March, and we are working on a plan to make this event memorable by having the next CJI, a Nagpur native, inaugurate it.”
