NEW DELHI: Former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is scheduled to appear before the Joint Committee of Parliament on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) Bill on August 19, 2025.

The committee, led by BJP MP P. P. Chaudhary, has been holding consultations with eminent personalities, legal luminaries, and constitutional experts to deliberate on the feasibility and framework of the ONOE initiative. With nine meetings already concluded, the panel has heard from former Chief Justices D. Y. Chandrachud, J. S. Khehar, and U. U. Lalit, adding gravitas and judicial insight to the ongoing discussions.

According to the notice issued on Thursday, the committee is set to meet on August 11 to interact with political scientists and subject experts. This session will be followed by the crucial meeting with ex-CJI Sanjiv Khanna on August 19, whose perspectives on the constitutional and legal aspects of simultaneous elections are expected to shape the committee’s recommendations.

What Is ‘One Nation, One Election’?

The One Nation, One Election proposal seeks to synchronize the electoral cycles of the Lok Sabha and State/UT Assemblies, thereby reducing the frequency of polls and streamlining governance. The idea is to hold simultaneous elections once every five years, beginning potentially in 2034 if the Bills are passed and implemented in time.
