The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, aiming for simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies. BJP MPs are called to Parliament for discussions on this important legislative matter. This major step is expected to enhance governance and reduce election-related disruptions, facilitating development across India.

New Delhi: Today, on Dec 12th, the Union Cabinet approved the ambitious ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, according to sources. This decision marks a major step toward implementing simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in a phased manner. The government is expected to introduce a comprehensive bill on the subject during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
BJP’s Call for Legislative Focus
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs, instructing them to be present in the Parliament on December 13 and 14 for discussions on important legislative matters, signaling the urgency and significance of this proposal.

On Wednesday, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan passionately advocated for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, describing frequent elections as a major impediment to India’s progress.
“Frequent Polls a Hurdle to Development”
Speaking at the International Gita Festival in Kurukshetra, Chouhan said:
“A glorious, prosperous, and powerful India is being built under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Soon, India will become the ‘Vishwa Guru’ (world leader). There is no doubt about it, and the whole world knows it.”
He added that frequent elections disrupt the nation’s development, saying:
“Any other thing may be happening or not in the country, but election preparations continue for twelve months all five years. When Lok Sabha elections get over, Assembly elections come. Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand are done, now Delhi Assembly polls are coming.”
Moving Toward Simultaneous Elections
The government’s focus on ‘One Nation, One Election’ gained momentum in September when it accepted the recommendations of a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee’s report emphasized the need for holding simultaneous elections to streamline governance and reduce the financial burden on the exchequer.
On December 9, sources revealed that the Narendra Modi government is actively preparing to introduce a bill in the Parliament to bring this initiative to fruition. The Cabinet’s approval of the Ram Nath Kovind Committee’s recommendations is a pivotal development in this direction.
What Lies Ahead?
If implemented, the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal aims to transform India’s electoral system, ensuring efficiency, reducing disruptions caused by frequent polls, and enabling the government to focus on developmental activities. The government’s move is expected to spark widespread debate in Parliament and across political lines.
