NEW DELHI: The Central Government has notified the appointment of nine additional judges of the Allahabad High Court as permanent judges. This move comes after a thorough evaluation process involving various stakeholders.

The notification, dated August 21, 2024, was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice under the authority of Article 217(1) of the Indian Constitution.

The nine judges who have been granted permanent status are:

  1. Justice Syed Qamar Hasan Rizvi
  2. Justice Manish Kumar Nigam
  3. Justice Anish Kumar Gupta
  4. Justice Nand Prabha Shukla
  5. Justice Kshitij Shailendra
  6. Justice Vinod Diwakar
  7. Justice Prashant Kumar
  8. Justice Manjive Shukla
  9. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal

This development was announced by Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal through a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary.

The process leading to these appointments began with the High Court Collegium recommending these nine judges for permanent status on May 28. The recommendation was then endorsed by the Chief Minister and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, signaling their approval of the proposed appointments.

The next step involved consultations with Supreme Court judges who are well-versed in the affairs of the Allahabad High Court. These judges reportedly agreed that all the recommended individuals were fit and suitable for confirmation as permanent judges.

Armed with this consensus, the Supreme Court Collegium proceeded to formally recommend the appointment of these nine judges as permanent members of the High Court bench. The Collegium’s decision was made after carefully examining all the relevant material and records pertaining to the candidates.

The notification of these appointments by the Central Government is being welcomed by the legal fraternity and the general public. It is seen as a positive move that will strengthen the Allahabad High Court and enhance its ability to efficiently handle the mounting caseload.

The confirmation of these nine judges as permanent members of the bench is expected to provide stability and continuity to the judicial system, ultimately benefiting the litigants seeking timely justice. This decision is also likely to boost the morale of the judiciary and inspire confidence in the public’s perception of the legal system.
