Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested two people who are believed to be behind a large religious conversion gang.

The main accused, Jalaluddin, who is also known as Chhangur Baba, and his aide Neetu, also known as Nasreen, were arrested from Madhpur in the Balrampur district.

Both have been taken into custody and sent to Lucknow District Jail after being presented before the court.

According to the official police statement released on Saturday,

“The poor, helpless labourers, weaker sections, and widowed women were lured with incentives, financial aid, promises of marriage, or forced through intimidation, in violation of established procedures for religious conversion by the accused.”

The police said that Jalaluddin had a non-bailable warrant issued against him by the court. In addition, the authorities had earlier placed a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest.

After their arrest, both Jalaluddin and Neetu were taken before a court, and their custody was officially granted. They are now lodged in the Lucknow District Jail.

The police had registered the case at Gomtinagar police station in Lucknow. The case has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and also under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

The police allege that Jalaluddin and his group were working in a systematic and organised manner to convert people, especially targeting vulnerable sections of society, from Hindu and non-Muslim communities to Islam.

As per the investigation, these people were converting individuals by giving them promises of financial help, marriage, or by threatening them. The process they followed went against the proper legal process required for religious conversions in Uttar Pradesh.
